The adoption process is basically an administrative proceeding. In most cases, you will not be required to appear in court for a formal hearing. The process requires the filing of a petition for adoption, substantial information regarding the adoptive parents as birth parents and completion of a pre-placement assessment by a licensed agency. If the birth parents do not consent to the adoption, a separate termination of parental rights proceeding may be required.
